Position Overview:

The Sustainable Tourism Program Assistant will play an essential role in supporting the Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program (STAMP) team, assisting with a project focused on sustainable tourism destination management in the Northeast region of Puerto Rico, specifically around El Yunque National Forest. This role involves collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, managing logistics, and contributing to project planning, implementation, and communication efforts. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, organized, and passionate about sustainability and community development.

This is a part-time (average 19 hours per week) contract position for one year, with potential to renew.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Field Work Planning and Coordination (50%)

  • Coordinate logistics for field visits in Puerto Rico, including transportation, accommodations, and itinerary planning.
  • Ensure that all field research trips are well-organized and within budget.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as preparing non-disclosure agreements, invoices, and reimbursements.

Project Management (40%)

  • Support the project management team in all aspects of project planning and execution.
  • Act as the in-person liaison with local stakeholders and the US Forest Service team.
  • Maintain strong relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and industry partners.
  • Monitor project progress, address challenges, and prepare reports on key milestones and achievements.

Strategy and Planning Support (10%)

  • Assist in developing strategies related to sustainable tourism, including research on tourism markets, supply chains, infrastructure, and policies.
  • Collaborate with local partners to align project goals and initiatives.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Economic Development, Environmental Science, Resource Management, Tourism, Protected Areas Management, Planning, Environmental Policy, Business, International Studies, or a related field.
  • 4-6 years of experience in travel, tourism, or hospitality, specifically in Puerto Rico. Experience in rural or international development is a plus.
  • Proven project management experience, including a minimum of 2 years in relevant roles.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity with the cultural, social, and economic landscape of Puerto Rico.
  • Effective communicator in both English and Spanish, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in sustainable tourism, community planning, small business development, or sustainable development.
  • Background in the travel, tourism, or outdoor recreation sectors in Puerto Rico.
